Access Tip: Become a keyboard warrior.

Become a keyboard warrior
I for one am partial to the keyboard. Every time I reach for my mouse, it slows me down and interrupts my typing. So here are a few tips that will help you master the keyboard and avoid using the mouse:

  • Combo boxes: Instead of reaching for the mouse and clicking on the down arrow next to the combo box, hold on to the <Alt> key and press the down arrow to view the combo box list. Let go of the <Alt> key and continue to use the down arrow to see the list. If it's a long list you can use <Page Up> or <Page Down> to see more of it. Once you have found the item, press "Enter" to select the item and move to the next field.
  • Copy Prior Value: Let's say you are doing data entry and the value you wish to type in a record column is exactly the same value in the record above. Just press <Ctrl>-<'> to copy from the above cell into the record your at.
  • Edit Command: To edit information in a field, just press the <F2> field. You can then backspace, modify or delete characters, (just as you would in Excel).
  • Go Home: When editing a long string of text in a field, you can press <Home> or <End> to go to the beginning or end of the line. It's faster then holding down the left or right arrow.
  • Step through words: Use the control key, <Ctrl>, and left or right arrows to quickly move from word to word.
