Expert Tip: Avoid spam on your mobile device
by Juan Soto, Senior Project Manager

No matter what device you use, cellphone, Blackberry or Treo, getting email from the office can be a godsend when it's relevant. But when you're getting Spam, it can hamper your productivity and clog your small device.

Technique Works with All Devices
Our technique works with all mobile devices that can receive email: the Treo line of phones, RIM Blackberries or Microsoft Mobile Phones.

Step 1: Create email address just for your device, and don't give it out to anyone!
Ask your IT department for an email account specifically for your device. Or create a new email account on your own. You will use it to forward email from the office as described below.

Step 2: Only forward email from your contacts, not from the spammers
Next, set up your office email program to forward emails to your device using a new email rule. Create the new rule to check all incoming email and only forward it if the sender is part of your contact list.  Be sure to keep your contact list updated in order to avoid missing any emails.

Step 3: Before leaving the office, keep your computer on and your email program running
If you don't, this technique will not work because your email cannot be forwarded with the computer off.

Step 4: Configure your device to respond with your main email address
While on the road and replying to emails, you want your recipients to see it coming from your main email address and not from your device.

Another great tip:
Many programs play a sound or alert you with a pop-up message when any new mail arrives. Given the amount of spam you may receive, this can be quite distracting. Instead, turn off sounds and notifications for new emails, create a new rule like the one above, and play a sound only when you receive emails from your list of contacts.
